A Replacement for Normafibe called Tumme Sterculia

A Replacement for an old favourite (Normafibe) called Tumme Sterculia

About 3 years ago I started a blog about the demise of a much-loved product called Normafibe, but obviously never actually posted it? I found it sitting in Drafts (along with about 150 others).

The old product was based on Sterculia and was an excellent bulker of bowel motions that were too loose. Loose stools in the situation where the internal and/or the external anal sphincter has been damaged (such as with vaginal births or with haemorroidectomy) cause anxiety for women and men, that they may have faecal incontinence episodes.

This is the letter that I received at the time from the CEO of the company that used to produce it:

Dear Customers,

Due to the ongoing difficulties in sourcing the key raw ingredient in NORMACOL® Plus and NORMAFIBE®, we regret to advise, Norgine Ltd has made the decision globally to discontinue these brands effective immediately.

Please consult your Healthcare Professional for an alternative medicine.

Should you have any other enquiries, please contact us via anzmedinfo@norgine.com or 1800 766 936.

We thank you for your understanding during this time.

Many thanks,

Norgine Pty Limited, Australia

I had a long conversation with the CEO of the South Pacific region of Norgine one afternoon, but despite me literally begging on behalf of all our patients suffering with this debilitating condition, it was to be no more. I even asked him: “Could he sell the recipe to someone else who could grow some sterculia trees?” The answer was again in the negative.

News about a new sterculia based product to help faecal incontinence called Tumme Sterculia

Some exciting news is yesterday, I received a text from one of my brilliant pelvic health colleagues telling me of a new Sterculia product called Tumme Sterculia.

Now it comes with absolutely no idea on my part as to its value and workability, but I know there will be many women and men who would be prepared to test it out, to help themselves with this unpleasant condition. One good endorsement for it is that it appears to come from the gut health expert, Dr Simone Peters (PhD), who is the creator of the very useful Nerva App, which helps with IBS and other gut issues via an app with gut-directed hypnotherapy.

  1. I have been using chia seeds when I couldn’t get normafibe, for about 2 years now and it seems to be fairly effective.

Me, my daughter and wife have all been using TUMME Sterculia (I used to be on Normafibe) and it works wonders. Very happy with it.
